What is Sofa Finance?
A sofa is often one of the most-used pieces of furniture in a British home, but not everyone has the budget to pay for a new one upfront. Sofa finance is simply a way of spreading that cost over time instead of paying it all at once. Rather than saving up for months, you take out a form of consumer credit, sometimes interest-free, and repay it in instalments. Your sofa can then be delivered and used while you pay off the balance over the agreed term.
At Furniture Direct Online, our flexible finance options are designed to make high-quality, comfortable sofas more accessible, so you don't have to compromise on style or comfort while you spread the cost.
How Does Sofa Finance Work?
We work with a number of trusted finance providers and payment services, including Snap Finance, Shop Pay, DivideBuy, Klarna, Clearpay and PayPal, each with slightly different terms, so it's worth comparing them against how much you want to borrow and how quickly you'd like to pay it off.
The application itself only takes a few minutes. You fill in some basic details online, and most providers give you a decision straight away or within a few minutes. If you're approved, you'll usually need to sign your finance agreement electronically before we can arrange delivery, so the sooner you sign, the sooner your new sofa arrives.
Depending on the provider, payments may be collected weekly, fortnightly or monthly, over anything from a few weeks to several years. Some shorter plans are interest-free, while interest may be added to longer repayment terms. As with any form of credit, check the total amount payable and work out what you can comfortably afford before applying, rather than choosing the longest term simply because it reduces each individual payment.

Pay monthly sofa finance lets you spread the cost of your new sofa into a series of monthly payments instead of paying the full price in one go. Furniture Direct Online offers monthly options through providers including Snap Finance, Shop Pay, DivideBuy and Klarna, with low or no deposit, Buy Now Pay Later and 0% APR plans available. Clearpay uses a shorter schedule of four instalments collected every two weeks. Monthly payments may suit customers who budget around a monthly salary or prefer fewer payment dates to keep track of.

Who is Eligible For Sofa Finance?
Eligibility depends on the provider, but most sofa finance options are open to UK residents aged 18 or over with a valid debit or credit card and a UK bank account. Providers carry out a credit check or affordability check as part of the application, and approval usually depends on your current income and outgoings as much as your credit history, so it's worth having a rough idea of your monthly budget before you apply.
UK resident aged 18 or over
A valid debit or credit card
A UK bank account
Passes a credit / affordability check
If your credit history isn't perfect, you may still be eligible for sofa finance. We work with specialist lenders such as Snap Finance and Payment Assist, which consider your current affordability and income as well as your past credit history. A lower credit score does not automatically rule you out, although approval and the terms offered remain subject to each provider's checks.
Choosing the Right Sofa Finance Option for You
With several providers and different ways to pay, it helps to narrow down your options by asking yourself a few simple questions. If you want to spread a smaller amount over a short period without paying any interest, a Buy Now Pay Later option like Clearpay or Klarna's Pay in 3 is usually the simplest route.
If you're paid weekly and would rather match your instalments to your pay cheque, pay weekly finance through Snap Finance is worth a look. For larger sofas or longer terms, DivideBuy and Klarna Financing both offer structured monthly plans, while Snap Finance covers everything from an 11-month interest-free term through to longer, interest-bearing options if you need more time to pay. Comparing the total amount payable, rather than just the size of each instalment, is the easiest way to see which option genuinely suits you best.

Our Sofa Finance Providers Explained
Furniture Direct Online offers several finance and Buy Now Pay Later options. Below, we explain five of the main providers and how each one works.
Snap Finance
Snap Finance offers an 11-month interest-free option, or you can spread the cost over a longer term of up to 48 months with interest applied. Some Snap Finance products also include an optional Pay in 4 feature. If you select it and clear the balance within four months, Snap will cancel the interest, subject to the applicable terms and conditions. As a guide, a representative Snap Finance loan of £1,200 repaid over 24 months works out at around £65 a month, with a representative APR of 29.9%. Applying takes a few minutes and gives you a personalised offer without affecting your credit file, though a full credit check is carried out once you go ahead.
Shop Pay
Shop Pay lets you check your eligibility and estimated payment amounts from a product page before you even reach checkout. You can choose interest-free instalments or pay with interest over a longer term, and once you're signed up, managing your payments is done through your Shop Pay account.
Clearpay
Clearpay splits your purchase into 4 interest-free instalments, paid every 2 weeks over 6 weeks in total. You'll need to be 18 or over and a permanent UK resident, and if a payment is missed, a late fee applies, capped at £24 or 25% of the order value, whichever is lower. It's a straightforward option, provided you're confident you can keep up with the fortnightly schedule.
DivideBuy
DivideBuy offers interest-free credit on orders from £50 to £6,000, spread over terms of 2 to 12 months with fixed monthly payments that stay the same for the whole agreement. You'll need to be a UK resident aged 18 to 75 with a valid card, mobile number and email address, and DivideBuy runs a credit check as part of the application, though its quick eligibility check won't affect your credit file.
Klarna
Klarna offers a few different ways to pay. Pay in 3 splits your order into three interest-free instalments taken every 30 days, while Pay in 30 Days allows eligible customers to pay up to 30 days after the order is shipped, with no upfront payment, interest or fees when paid on time. For longer terms, Klarna Financing spreads the cost over 6 to 24 months with interest applied. Klarna Financing currently has a representative APR of 21.9% fixed, although the repayment amount and total cost will depend on the agreement offered at checkout.
Frequently Asked Questions
What credit score do I need for sofa finance?
There's no single credit score that guarantees approval, since each provider sets its own lending and affordability criteria. Providers such as Snap Finance consider your current income and outgoings alongside your credit history, so some applicants with a lower score may still be accepted. Approval is not guaranteed.
What documents do I need for sofa finance?
Most applications ask for basic personal and contact details, including your name, address, date of birth, email address, mobile number and payment information. A provider may also request proof of income or additional information when assessing affordability, so requirements can vary between applications.
Is a sofa on finance classed as a loan?
Sofa finance is a form of consumer credit. Some options are structured as personal or retail loans, while others are Buy Now Pay Later or Deferred Payment Credit agreements. The exact type of agreement, repayment schedule and any interest or fees will be explained in the provider's terms before you accept it.
Can I sell a sofa that's still on finance?
It depends on the type of finance agreement. Under many personal loan or credit-sale arrangements, you own the sofa but remain responsible for every outstanding repayment even if you sell it.
Can I get sofa finance as a student?
Yes, students can apply for sofa finance, although approval depends on affordability and the provider's standard eligibility criteria. Being aged 18 or over and having a UK bank account does not guarantee acceptance.
Can I get sofa finance if I'm on benefits?
Being on benefits doesn't automatically rule you out, though each provider assesses affordability individually and some ask about your income sources as part of the application. It's worth checking with the specific provider before you apply, since criteria can vary.
Which sofas can I buy on finance?
Finance is available across the full range at Furniture Direct Online, from corner sofas to sofa beds and recliner sofas, so you can spread the cost on almost any style you choose.
