Why Buy a 4 Seater Sofa?

A 4 seater sofa gives everyone at home a proper seat at the same time, which is the main reason people size up from a 3 seater. Nobody ends up perched on the arm or pulling in a dining chair on film night, and when it's just two of you, there's room to stretch out.

It can also make the room easier to plan. With one large sofa instead of a separate 3 seater and 2 seater, you're arranging everything around a single footprint.

When you buy a 4 seater sofa from Furniture Direct Online, delivery is free, orders are dispatched the same or next working day, and your sofa can arrive in as little as 5 days. Our two-person team carries it into the room of your choice, seven days a week, and you can spread the cost with one of our finance plans.

What Is a 4 Seater Sofa?

A 4 seater sofa, also called a four seater couch or settee, is a large sofa made to seat four adults. That doesn't always mean four separate seat cushions. The Chestnut Cream 4 Seater Sofa, for example, uses two wide bench cushions that run the full length of the frame, so nobody has to sit on the gap between two seats.

The four seats can sit in a straight line or wrap around a corner. Straight 4 seaters suit long walls and open-plan rooms. Corner, L shape and chaise designs use the room differently, turning the seating through a corner instead of needing one long stretch of wall.

What Size Is a 4 Seater Sofa?

A straight 4 seater sofa is usually around 240cm wide and just under 1m deep. That's roughly 20 to 45cm longer than an average 3 seater and needs a fair amount of clear wall.

Corner and L shape 4 seaters are measured along both sides, and their footprints vary more than the seat count suggests. In our range, the Chestnut Chaise Sofa measures 224cm by 162cm and the Serena Electric Sofa Bed 240cm by 120cm, while the Sloane 4 Seater Right Hand Corner is considerably larger at 265cm by 195cm.

Seat depth is worth comparing too, because it changes how the sofa feels. If you like a deep seat sofa you can curl up on, the Sloane's 76cm seats give you plenty of room. The Chestnut Chaise Sofa has a 60cm seat depth, which gives it a more upright feel than the deeper Sloane.

Before you order, measure your wall space and leave a walkway of around 75 to 90cm where people move through the room. Marking the sofa's footprint on the floor with masking tape is the easiest way to see how it will actually sit. Our sofa dimensions guide covers every measurement, including doorways and stairs.

Standard 4 Seater Sofa

A standard 4 seater is a straight sofa with an arm at each end, and it's the simplest way to seat four. It works well against a long wall, or floating in an open-plan room where a corner sofa would get in the way of the flow.

Our straight option is the Chestnut 4 Seater Sofa at £849, available in cream and espresso Enzo fabric. It has a low, boxy shape with chunky block arms, and the raised block feet leave room to vacuum underneath. Two scatter cushions come included, and matching Chestnut pieces are available if you want to build the room around it later.

4 Seater Corner Sofa

A 4 seater corner sofa, or corner settee, tucks into the angle between two walls and spreads the seating across two sides of the room. It keeps the middle of the room clear and suits square living rooms, or open-plan spaces where a long straight sofa would take up too much of one wall.

The Sloane 4 Seater Right Hand Corner is our dedicated 4 seater corner sofa. It measures 265cm by 195cm, costs £999 and is upholstered in grey plush velvet over a hardwood frame, with deep 76cm seats for a laid-back sit. As the layout is right-hand only, it's worth planning around your doors, radiators and walkways.

If you need room for more than four, our corner sofas range includes larger layouts.

4 Seater L Shape Sofa

An L shape sofa turns the seating through a right angle and uses two sides of the room instead of one long straight run. Many L shape designs have one longer side and one shorter section, and on chaise designs that shorter section works as a lounging seat rather than a full second row of seats.

The main thing to get right is which hand you need. On our product pages, left hand and right hand are described as you face the sofa, so a right-hand chaise sits on your right when you're looking at it. Check where your door, radiator and TV are before you choose, because the shorter side shouldn't block a walkway or a view of the screen.

The Chestnut Chaise Sofa comes in both left and right hand versions. The Sloane 4 Seater Corner is only available as a right-hand layout.

4 Seater Chaise Sofa

A chaise sofa combines a full 3 seater with a wide chaise section at one end, giving one person room to stretch their legs out while the rest of the sofa is used for normal, upright sitting. It can be a good middle ground when you want somewhere to lounge but a full corner sofa would feel too big for the room.

The Chestnut Chaise Sofa measures 224cm by 162cm and costs £999 in cream or espresso Enzo fabric, with a left or right hand chaise. It has full back and scatter cushions and removable back cushion covers.

The trade-off is that the chaise works best as a lounging seat. If you need four conventional upright seats every evening, a straight 4 seater or a corner sofa is the better fit.

4 Seater Sofa Bed

A 4 seater sofa bed makes sense if your living room has to double as a guest room. You get seating for the whole household during the day and a proper bed for visitors at night, without giving up space to a spare bed.

The Serena Electric Sofa Bed is our 4 seater sofa bed, priced at £1,499 in light grey or chocolate Boston fabric. Its seat depth adjusts electrically at the press of a button, so you can sit upright or stretch out, and it opens into a 226cm by 110cm sleeping area.

If storage matters more than push-button comfort, our wider sofa bed range also includes the Sophia Corner Sofa Bed with Storage at £1,099. It pulls out into a wider 197cm by 142cm bed that sleeps two adults, and the chaise lifts up to hide bedding underneath. You'll find more sizes and layouts in our sofa beds collection.

4 Seater Recliner Sofa

We don't currently sell a straight 4 seater recliner sofa. If you need a reclining sofa with 4 seats or more, a recliner corner sofa or a 3+2 recliner set is the closest alternative.

Among our recliner corner sofas, the Roma seats five and starts from £799 in faux leather. A 3+2 recliner sofa set also seats five, and because it's split across two separate sofas, you have more freedom in how you arrange the room.

If being able to put your feet up matters more than the reclining mechanism itself, a 4 seater chaise sofa may be the simpler choice.

Grey 4 Seater Sofa

Grey is an easy colour to live with. It hides everyday marks better than cream, works with most wall colours and lets cushions and throws add the personality. The shade and fabric make a difference, though. Light grey keeps a room bright and relaxed, while grey plush velvet has a soft sheen that looks richer in the evening light.

Our current grey 4 seater options are the Serena Electric Sofa Bed in light grey Boston fabric and the Sloane 4 Seater Right Hand Corner in grey plush velvet. The Sloane also has a matching Sloane Luxury Large Footstool in the same grey.

Cream 4 Seater Sofa

A cream 4 seater sofa makes a large piece of furniture feel lighter, which helps in smaller rooms where a dark sofa can dominate. Cream goes naturally with wood, brass and warm textures, and it's an easy base for changing cushions with the seasons.

The obvious worry is keeping it clean, and removable covers or a forgiving weave make that much easier. The Chestnut Chaise Sofa in cream has removable back cushion covers, and the Chestnut Cream 4 Seater Sofa uses a textured Enzo weave that brushes clean of crumbs and pet hair.

Brown 4 Seater Sofa

Brown is a practical, warm choice for a large sofa. Deeper shades are better than cream at hiding crumbs and light everyday marks between cleans, and warmer tones can make a big sofa feel more welcoming.

The Chestnut Espresso 4 Seater Sofa is a rich, dark brown in textured Enzo fabric, and the same shade is available as the Chestnut Espresso Chaise Sofa. For a guest bed as well, the Serena Electric Sofa Bed comes in chocolate Boston fabric.

4 Seater Fabric Sofas

All of our current 4 seater sofas are upholstered in fabric, and each one feels and wears a little differently.

Enzo fabric, used on the Chestnut range, has a textured weave that resists pilling and helps disguise light marks. Boston fabric, on the Serena, is a dense, textured weave that keeps its finish through daily use. Plush velvet, on the Sloane, is soft to the touch and has a gentle sheen, though the pile needs a little more care to keep it looking even.

If you have pets or young children, a textured weave like Enzo or Boston is usually the more practical choice. Our sofa fabrics guide explains each material in more detail.

4 Seater Leather Sofa

We don't have a straight leather 4 seater in the range at the moment. If leather upholstery is a priority, our leather recliner sofas include five-seat corner designs such as the Roma in faux leather from £799 and the Sorrentino in Aire leather from £849.

If you specifically want a straight 4 seater rather than a corner recliner, our current 4 seater sofas are all upholstered in fabric.

Complete Your Living Room with Matching Products

If you choose a 4 seater from the Chestnut range, the Chestnut Armchair with Cushion costs £475 and comes in cream and espresso, matching both 4 seater colourways. The Chestnut Storage Footstool at £329 uses the same Enzo fabric and gives you somewhere to rest your feet and hide away throws and remotes. It comes in cream, coco, black and slate grey, with the cream matching the Chestnut Cream sofa. The range also includes 2 and 3 seater sofas in the same fabric, if your room has space for a second sofa.

For the Sloane 4 Seater Corner, the Sloane Luxury Large Footstool costs £279 in matching grey plush velvet. You'll find more ideas in our armchairs and footstools collections.

Delivery

Delivery is free on all our sofas, although we can't deliver to a few areas, including some Scottish Highland and island postcodes and Northern Ireland, so check your postcode before you order. Orders are dispatched the same or next working day and can arrive in as little as 5 days. Timings vary by item, and each product page shows its own estimate. Our courier texts you to book a slot, deliveries run seven days a week, and you'll get a two-hour delivery window the day before.

A two-person team carries your sofa into the room of your choice. Some of our 4 seaters need simple self-assembly at home. If the sofa doesn't fit or isn't right, you can hand it back to the delivery team before they leave for a full refund, as long as it hasn't been assembled and is still in its original packaging. See our delivery guide information and free returns pages for full details.

Finance Options

A 4 seater sofa is a big purchase, so we offer several ways to spread the cost. You can pay in interest-free instalments with DivideBuy, or choose a plan through Snap Finance, Klarna, Clearpay, Shop Pay or PayPal. Some plans are interest-free while others add interest over longer terms, so check the total amount payable before you apply. Most providers give you a decision within minutes at checkout, and our sofa finance guide compares each option side by side.

FAQ

How long is a 4 seater sofa?

Most straight 4 seaters measure about 240cm from arm to arm. Corner and chaise designs are measured along both sides instead, and the largest in our range, the Sloane 4 Seater Corner, is 265cm along its longest side. The length of a 4 seater sofa varies from model to model, and every product page lists the full dimensions.

How wide is a 4 seater sofa?

Arm to arm, a straight 4 seater is typically about 240cm wide, with a depth of just under 1m. Corner and chaise sofas have two main measurements, one for each side. Some listings call the arm-to-arm figure the length, so read the full set of figures to be sure you're comparing like with like.

Are 4 seater sofas bigger than 3 seater sofas?

Yes, in most cases. A typical 3 seater is roughly 195cm to 218cm wide, while a straight 4 seater is closer to 240cm, which means finding an extra 20 to 45cm of wall space. Because a corner 4 seater spreads its seats along two walls, it can sometimes fit a room where a long straight sofa wouldn't.

What is a 4 seater split sofa?

A split sofa comes apart into two or more sections that are joined together once they're inside the room. It helps if you have a narrow front door, a tight hallway or an awkward staircase. Some corner and chaise sofas are delivered this way, and the Chestnut Espresso Chaise Sofa, for instance, arrives in separately packed, detachable sections. How a sofa splits varies by model, so if access is tight, ask our team how big the largest delivered section is.

How many cushions are on a 4 seater sofa?

There's no fixed number. Some 4 seaters have one seat cushion per person, while others use fewer, wider cushions. The Chestnut 4 Seater Sofa, for example, uses two long bench seat cushions and comes with two scatter cushions. Go by the stated seating capacity rather than the cushion count, because the two don't always match.

How much does an average 4 seater sofa weigh?

There isn't a reliable average, because the weight depends on the frame, filling, size and any built-in mechanism. Weights aren't listed on our product pages, but you can get in touch for the figure on a particular sofa, for example to check a lift limit or a delicate floor. Either way, our two-person delivery team does the carrying.

How do I get a 4 seater sofa through a door?

Start with a tape measure. Check the clear width and height of every door, hallway and staircase on the route, then compare the narrowest point with the sofa's depth and height, since a sofa usually goes through a doorway on its back or end rather than flat. Sofas delivered in sections are much easier, because only the largest section has to fit through. Don't remove feet or other parts unless the product page or our team confirms they're designed to come off.

How do you put on a 4 seater stretch sofa cover?

Take the seat cushions off and find the back of the cover, which is usually labelled. Pull the top over the backrest first, then over the arms, and smooth it down over the seat and front. Tuck the spare fabric firmly into the gaps between the seat, back and arms so it doesn't ride up, then fasten any elastic or ties underneath and put the cushions back. If you'd rather not use a stretch cover at all, a sofa with removable cushion covers, like the Chestnut Chaise Sofa, is less work to keep clean.
